There are a few different things to consider once you’ve decided to invest in steel staircases. On this page, we’ve looked to run through a few design elements that are worth giving thought to. But if you’re in Kingston and in any way unsure about what you’re looking for, don’t fret –MS Engineering & Building Services Ltd is here to help.

We have a full in-house design team that will translate your formative ideas into a reality, checking off your wish list and delivering you a product you’ll be proud to have on your premises for many, many years to come. Once our steel engineers have drawn up schematics to your specifications, our steel fabricators will create the staircase itself, ready for installation. This makes us a highly convenient, one-stop steelwork solution for homeowners, companies and industrial entities in and around the Kingston area.

Rules and Regulations – There are a number of building regulations that need to be adhered to by steel engineers designing and installing steel staircases in the Kingston area.

  • Steel staircases must have a maximum rise of 220mm, and a minimum going of 220m. The rise is the height of each individual step, while the going is its width.
  • Our steel fabricators are obliged to ensure that the staircases they make have a maximum pitch of 42°. The pitch refers to the diagonal angle the staircase ascends.
  • If less than a meter wide, steel staircases must have at least one handrail. If over one meter wide, they should feature two.
  • Balustrading shouldn’t feature any opening larger than a 100mm sphere.
  • There should be at least 2000mm of headroom above the staircase’s pitch line.

Shape of the Staircase – While a single straight flight of stairs may be the most efficient way of heading from A to B, it isn’t always a viable option. A split flight with a 90° or 180°turn landing may be more suitable. Another option is employing “winders”, which are special steps that allow staircases to turn corners. You could even go for a spiral staircase, which are currently considered a very stylish option for both homes and workplaces.

To decide on the shape of your staircase, you must consider what’s possible, what’s convenient and what would be most to your taste. Don’t hesitate to call our steel engineers for further advice on any of these points, we may be able to help you reach a compromise if a certain shape you’re after isn’t going to be practical in your space.

Balustrading – Spindles, handrails and newel posts can be added into the design of steel staircases to give them distinct character and increased functionality. This is known as balustrading. Some Kingston clients even integrate timber, glass and different metals to form ornate balustrading that’s ideal for homes and commercial premises.
